The Truth About Ostara: How to Celebrate Spring Equinox

“The equinox is an invitation to begin again.”

As the world begins to emerge from winter's grasp, the promise of the Spring Equinox invites us to embrace renewal, balance, and the relentless march of time. This pivotal moment in the year marks the point where day and night are of equal length, symbolising equilibrium and heralding the return of warmth and light. It's this magical transition that we delve into, exploring how to honour the changing seasons through personal practices and age-old traditions, albeit with a fresh perspective.

The Truth About Ostara: How to Celebrate Spring Equinox

In contemporary pagan practices, many refer to this time as Ostara. This name is derived from Eostre, or Eostre, a Germanic goddess mentioned by an 8th-century monk called Bede. While Bede documented an old Anglo-Saxon month named after this goddess, there is scant evidence that Eostre was a widely worshipped deity or that a festival was held in her honour. It wasn't until the 19th century that folklorist Jacob Grimm speculated about a deeper, ancient tradition tied to Ostara. Despite the lack of solid historical backing, the integration of Ostara into modern Wiccan and pagan celebrations has found resonance, blending the old myths with newer traditions.

Yet, whether recognised as Ostara or simply the Spring Equinox, what cannot be disputed is its profound symbolism: a time of balance, rebirth, and rejuvenation. The Earth's awakening from its winter slumber mirrors our own opportunity for inner renewal and growth. This is the Earth's turning point, a shift away from the stillness of winter and stepping into a season of fertility and expansion.

Spring is a perfect time for us to plant seeds—not just in the soil, but also in our lives. These seeds of intention, nurtured over the coming months, prepare us for a bountiful harvest in the autumn. It's a moment to reflect: What dreams are you ready to grow? What intentions are seeking your nurturing touch?

To truly embody this seasonal shift, we can employ symbols and correspondences that resonate with the Spring Equinox. Soft greens, golden yellows, and the first blush of pinks dominate this season, mirroring the fresh energy of new growth and the returning sun. Working with specific crystals can further amplify this energy—stones like aquamarine for clarity and renewal, rose quartz for self-love and harmony, citrine for joy and abundance, and moss agate for grounding and connectivity with nature’s cycles.

Complementing these stones, herbs and flowers also reemerge, carrying their unique vibrational magic. Lavender offers peace, chamomile prosperity, while resilient dandelions return as symbols of endurance. Violets soon bloom, carrying messages of intuition and luck. These botanical allies can accompany us in spells, teas, offerings, or ritual baths, fully embracing this seasonal shift.

Animal energies, too, are abundant. Hares and rabbits symbolise fertility and swift energy, while the songs of returning birds speak of freedom and new beginnings. Deer represent gentle strength as they tread the boundary between worlds, reminding us that as we step into this new cycle, we do so both gently and with resilience.

Celebrating this transformative time can take many forms. Fire and light magic harness the duality of the equinox—equal light and dark—offering a moment to reflect on what to leave behind with winter and what to embrace with the coming warmth. Lighting a candle, welcoming the sunrise, or safely burning old fears and doubts are simple yet profound rituals that align with the equinox.

Eggs, long associated with the Spring Equinox, represent potential and renewal. Whether used in spells, decorated, or planted with intentions, eggs are potent symbols of what is yet to come. Creating an Ostara altar filled with fresh flowers, eggs, seeds, and crystals can further anchor this energy within our homes.

Crafting during this time also channels the equinox's energy. Natural egg dyes, herbal charm bags, and carved intention candles are just a few ways to express creativity and purpose. Inviting the energies of animal spirits, whether through observation, meditation, or offerings, allows us to connect deeply with the Earth’s creatures during this revival period.

Remember, the equinox is not just about grand gestures. Honour the shift through small, intentional acts—wearing seasonal colours, enjoying a moment in the sun, drinking intentional chamomile tea—each act a quiet tribute to nature's cycle and our place within it.

In a world steeped in the traditions and myths of our ancestors, embracing the Spring Equinox reminds us that every ending is merely a new beginning. As you celebrate, ponder what seeds you wish to plant, what energies to cultivate, and how you will thrive alongside the returning light.
