What is Lammas/Lughnasadh and How Can You Celebrate

"In every grain of wheat, there is a story of the Earth’s abundance and the magick of the changing seasons."

Hello, my beautiful wild ones! Have you ever felt the pulse of the Earth beneath your feet, the whisper of the wind through golden fields, calling you to dance and celebrate the sacred rhythms of Mother Nature? If you’re nodding along, cosy up with your favourite tea because today, we’re about to embark on a wondrous exploration of Lammas, or Lughnasadh, a festival brimming with deep connection, divine gratitude, and abundant magick.

What is Lammas / Lughnasadh and How Can You Celebrate

Lammas - The Heartbeat of the First Harvest

Celebrated with vibrant intention on the 1st of August in the northern hemisphere, Lammas marks the first harvest. It's a time to give thanks for the Earth’s bounty, honour the changing seasons, and prepare for the darker months ahead. At its core, Lammas is an invitation to connect deeply with the cycles of nature, to celebrate abundance, and to reflect on the harvests of our own lives.

Derived from “loaf mass,” Lammas is all about gratitude and transformation, entwined with ancient Celtic traditions and named after the Celtic God Lugh, the God of light and craftsmanship. The stories of Lugh’s feast for his foster mother and the tale of John Barleycorn (a spirit of grain) echo the timeless cycles of life, death, and rebirth, reminding us of the sacred sacrifices and gifts of Mother Earth.

Celebrate with Heart, Spirit, and Craft

Let’s dive into the joyous, crafty, and incredibly fulfilling ways to celebrate Lammas, connecting with its energies of abundance and gratitude.

  • Adorn Yourself in the Colours of the Season:
Picture yourself wrapped in hues of gold, orange, yellow, and green. These rich, warm colours mirror the golden fields and ripe fruits. Simply wearing these tones can connect you to the vibrant energy of Lammas.

  • Crystals to Amplify Your Intentions:
Crystals such as citrine, carnelian, and amber are perfect companions for this festival. Citrine brings abundance and prosperity, carnelian boosts creativity and motivation, and amber offers protection and courage. Carry them, meditate with them, or place them on your altar to harness their vibrant energies.

  • Herbal Magick and Healing:
Herbs like basil, mint, and rosemary can be powerful allies. Basil attracts prosperity, mint enhances healing, and rosemary offers protection and purification. Make herbal sachets, brew teas, or cook with these magickal plants to celebrate the season’s bounty.

  • Crafting Corn Dollies:
Embrace your inner artisan and create corn dollies from the last sheaves of the harvest. These figures symbolise the spirit of the grain and serve as protective talismans. There’s something incredibly soulful about crafting with intention—go ahead, braid those husks and pour your heart into it.

  • Create a Sun-Kissed Wreath:
Gather sunflower heads, wheat stalks, and other seasonal plants to craft a stunning wreath. Hang it on your door or use it as a centrepiece, symbolising the sun’s life-giving energy and the harvest's abundance.

  • Gratitude Jar:
Start a gratitude jar, beautifully decorated with symbols of Lammas. Write down the blessings and joys you are thankful for, placing them in the jar. On the festival day next year, read them aloud, celebrating the abundance in your life.

  • Rituals and Sacred Practices
This sacred festival is imbued with the energy of abundance, prosperity, and transformation. Cultivating rituals can be an incredibly nourishing way to honour this time.

  • Bake Bread with Intention:
Consider baking a simple honey oat bread. As you knead the dough, infuse it with your hopes and dreams. Once baked, share it with loved ones, symbolising the sharing of your blessings. Offer a piece to the deities you work with or to the Earth, expressing gratitude.

  • Fire Magick:
Light a bonfire or candles in hues of gold and orange. Write down what you wish to release, perhaps on a bay leaf, and toss it into the flames, allowing transformation to work its magick.

  • Walk in Nature:
Take a mindful walk, gathering items that symbolise the first harvest. Use these in your rituals or to decorate your altar, creating a tangible connection to the Earth’s energy.

  • Divination:
Seek guidance through tarot or oracle cards, focusing on your harvest and future intentions. Let your intuition guide you, offering clarity for the upcoming seasons.
